It's interesting to me listening to some of my old mixtapes and studying where my head was at at that point in time. Audio Animation was one of my very first mixtapes, in fact it's probably the 3 or 4th mxtape I had ever made in my career as a DJ. I created it with my homie Dj Ed Swift who was another ill Dj I knew back in Jersey.He was also an I'll Artist and Graphic designer and did the cover for the mixtape so it was mos def a team endeavour. It was the mid 90s and I was engulfed in the Turntablist and hip hop underground movement, and techniques and technical prowess was the focus of dopeness. Performing difficult cuts and juggles were periodically sprinkled in to establish my technical prowess and assert my dominance and the musical selection refelcted the blossoming independent hip hop music movement led by record stores like Fat Beats at the time. In other words I was battling and being bragadocious (an integral element of hip hop of course) Hip Hop kid from NYC, . My more mature and more experienced ears hear an overt need to perform technically on tape but so was the norm back in the day. I have "mellowed" as a DJ and prefer a combination of flow and skill which was a main binding agent for the forming of the Triple Threat Djs in the late 90's. and also a reflection of the continued learning and experience I was blessed to recieved for years after this mix was released.

My very first piece of studio production equipment was the Tascam 424 which I picked up at the infamous Canal Street electronics dealers, and an Ibanez delay pedal I got from an old class mate. I'd run the DJ setup through the pedal for scratch effects. This specific recording technique and style of mix was the precursor to one of my most well known golden era hip hop mixes which I produced a few years later when I moved to California better known as Reconstruction. Listening to Audio Animation now, I see it as a rough draft or an unpolished version to Reconstruction which I am told by many fans of my mixes was pretty good so I'll take you word for it. But If you havnt heard AA yet , I hope you enjoy and appreciate it for what it is. For me it was a fun time expanding my DJ skills and one of the most creative times in the history of Djing to be a part of.

I quickly put together an edited version of a section of my new mix Return of the Jedi: House form 1A. Iv'e been saying the Dicer controllers are game changers especially when it comes to adding a cool new dimension with turntable manipulation. In an age where midi controllers and Laptop computers are replacing old technology like the turntable, I thought it would be a great to demonstrate some of the old ways are still useful in a Dance music environment if used in context and flows with the genre of music you are manipulating. Return of the Jedi: the Mix series

Whats up with the Star Wars stuff? Yea I know, I geek out, but a lot of the mythology that makes Star Wars so popular is based in the classic mythologies and teachings of many cultures in our worlds history. These are concepts deeply ingrained in our consciousness. The young hero Luke Skywalker vs the Evil monster Darth Vader, the rag tag Rebel Alliance challenging the corrupt Emperor and the Great Empire( the 1% vs the 99%). A Belief in a higher power or an unseen Force. For many including myself Star Wars is our modern day version of Beowulf, Greek Mythology or a Biblical story that has deep meaning and moral undertones.

For myself the Jedi Knights and their beliefs have always inspired me. A noble group who followed a certain moral code to inspire and make peoples lives better throughout the Galaxy. In some ways I find some similarities to the last generation of Great Djs. We practiced our skills incessantly like Jedi's with their ability to manipulate the Force and Light saber fighting techniques to defend ourselves in Battle. As technology progressed, and Dj equipment changed, some of us still hold on to the Turntable as our main form of manipulation similar to the Jedi, who use the lightsaber in a world of Blaster rifles as their main weapon. As Obi-Wan put it : "An elegant weapon, from a more civilized age." It's a choice I make because of tradition and a preference for manipulating music a certain way. Now I am not trying to put down any progress or change happening in the Dj world I just consider myself part of a great tradition of Djs and choose to hold on to some of those teachings. But for the most part thats where the similarities end with Djing.

More significantly, the real appeal for me are the philosophies the Jedi characters and of course George Lucas emulate. Many of these are based in religious philosophies such as Buddhism for example:

-Mastering your emotions and not letting anger, fear and hate control you or lead your decisions.
You can be self-centered and "look out for self". This is a common attitude in western society and unfortunately permeates a lot of popular music to it's core at the moment. Or use your Powers to make other's lives better, a life of Sacrifice, a life of gratitude. Which is more fulfilling to you? The path of the Dark side or the Light side?
-Anything you put your mind too you can accomplish. If you don't believe you can do it, have the resources, have the time, then you have already set the tone.
-Their is the Belief in a deeper meaning to life and that there lies a great Force or Spirit beneath the surface that we can't see and we can tap at anytime. Faith...
-And always trust your instinct. Always do what you feel is right: "Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become"-Steve Jobs

Truthfully I have been to my own kind of Dark Side. I let fear,regret, anger, ego, engulf me for some time. I feared losing my spot. I let that fear control how I created and represented my music. I've even held some music back thinking many of you would not appreciate it. I began to regret my career because it was not where I wanted it to be and I held anger against those who I felt wronged me or did not support me. My accomplishments from my past became my crutch, my identity. I forgot the joy that music use to bring me when I first began on my journey. I let all of this affect my relationships with people and those I cared for.

It took a series of Life changes to shake me up which I would rather not bore you with the details since this post is already long enough. But I feel in the last year or so I've found a path. Each day I am learning to Battle my fears and control my anger. I no longer fear losing my spot because it is not my spot to lose. Anything I've accomplished is because great people and fans supported me and I'm so appreciative of that fact. I have long forgiven those who I have clashed with and now honestly wish to express myself with no fear, no regret, only the joy of creating and seeing my projects to completion. I appreciate each person I meet and wish and hope any interaction we have enriches their life in someway. And I've also learned to let go. I've learned to trust the Force will guide me as I keep gratitude in my heart for the opportunity to work on my craft and what I have been blessed to experience. And knowing that enables me to express myself more freely and not be held in the constrains of being a certain kind of person. I no longer fear whether you accept me or not as I have learned to accept myself.

So its taken me some time but I feel I am back in Flow with things and this new House Music Mix RETURN OF THE JEDI is one of the first projects in my newly rediscovered energy state. It's the first of a series of mixes under this title covering a span of things that influence me ergo the "House Form 1a" to identify each volume I'll be releasing since I'll be jumping around creatively.I hope I give some enjoyment to your lives with this one just as many of you have proclaimed to me with the So Much Soul Series. I know there are many of you out there who are into a diverse array of music as I am and I know we will find each other via the Force. I am only beginning on this new path and hope to discover much about myself creatively and I think you will all be pleasantly surprised into what I am evolving into.

So when some of you see me compare myself to the Jedi, please realize I do not speak from a egocentric place about DJ skills. This is much bigger then anything I could of ever accomplished in that world. And most people who know me personally know that I am actually quite humble. This is about following my voice even if it leads me into unfamiliar territory without fear and an open heart. I no longer deny what I am and the experiences that have shaped me. I am Unique in my talents just as all the other DJ/Jedi's/People in this Galaxy and I have long denied myself that recognition. I've discovered that in order to give of myself I must be able to receive what appreciation you give to me. I thank those of you who consider me a legend in the Dj world and accept the criticism from those who disagree .Its been an amazing fun, and turbulent journey and I've got my heart ,mind and soul open to whats next. I'm realizing Djing is only a small part of my story and I hope many of you will appreciate and support my new expanded path. I am a Jedi, and I most certainly have returned.

The Beat Connect:
is a cooperative compilation instrumental project established to spearhead a community movement for the San Francisco Bay Area's diverse urban music culture. The hopes of the project is to establish a dialogue for beat makers,music and media producers, DJs and artists to expand and build a solid network and establish a strong footing for themselves within the Bay Area entertainment industry. On a more logistical standpoint, Artists and Producers will benefit from an expanded network to assist in completing projects and effectively increasing the output of quality music coming from the Bay. As the World Economy continues to move into an information based model, artists in the Bay Area are in a key position to move to the forefront of the migration of marketing and media to the web with their work. A key step is to create a network of like minded artists working in conjunction rather than independent satellites. The Goal is to create an interdependent ecosystem that cultivates and stimulates growth and infrastructure for the Bay's creative culture so we can begin to export our talent to a national and international platform..This is the Beat Connect.

The Millenium Social Project "I Feel Your Energy"

As technology specifically the social aspect of it becomes more and more integrated into our lives, its forever changing the way we communicate. Music has always been a great way for people to communicate and Millenium Social represents exactly that: A meeting of the minds and hearts of some great artists. The Millenium Social Project is the first Dance/Alternative music project being released on ThatsThat featuring some stellar talent. The idea was for great Songwriters, Djs, Singers and Music producers to connect and create soulful and fun music. The lead single "I Feel Your Energy" was co-produced by Dj Teeko who was recently featured on Mark Ronson's latest album and co-produced and written by Dj Vinroc. Additional Remixes from one of Om Records biggest Djs and Producers the Legendary J Boogie as well as House producer and Globe Trotting SF based DJ DJ Bryan Boogie "I Feel Your Energy" is an ode to the beautiful Energy expressed on the dance floor and the freedom letting loose can bring to your soul. I've had Remix idea for a minute now. Its a track from the Ethnicali instrumental project I put out in 2006. I've always felt that lining it up with Pharcyde's "Passin me By" would be an interesting blend that would hold true to the style of the original but be different at the same time. I had the pleasure years ago to hang with Brown and Imani at their studio in LA when Triple Threat Djs and Pharcyde did a few tour dates together. But I've fallen out of touch with them over the years. Hopefully they approve of the rework and maybe to some of you give a Hip Hop Classic a new twist that does the original proud.

Easy for You was a track I worked on with talented MC Mike Baker the Bike Maker a while back. Mike Baker hails from the Island nation of Alameda just off the coast of Oakland California AKA "The Town". I like to think of Alameda as the other infamous Island in the Bay other than Alcatraz

I wanted to do a special project to support the release of the ThatsThat Sampler album and I thought what better way to do it then then do a music video. I listened to the track a few times and realized how fun and positive the track was,a concept rarely seen in todays hip hop music. It reminded me of some Golden Era Native Tongues stuff.The idea for the music video "popped" into my head so to speak as I was visualizing the lyrics. Check out the video and I hope you enjoy!

I made this one in the 05. I have no idea why its named Motola. At the time I was really influnced by Dilla and Hi-tek so you can probably here a lot of that style in this one.. If you don't hear it then I'm obviously on one. If I remember right there are some elements of some old Chinese records from the 60's. I was intrigued by these chinese bands being inspired by american rock bands of the time. I always thought the way they mixed the records had a nice quality to it...Good luck figuring it out where I got it beatmakers cuz I can't remember.If you do, please message me.

Back in the Dayz AKA Reconstruction 3 was a Japan only release I had put out quietly in the early 2000's and part of my Reconstruction Golden age of Hip Hop series. I recently found a cassette copy in the garage archives and finally found a way to transfer it digitally. A challenging feat when you don't own a tape deck anymore. I never did duplicate the Turntable gymnastics of the first volume but there are some choice Dj cuts from the triple threat album and a more tame version of turntablism which actually reflected a lot of my attitudes about putting records together at the time...Enough of the analysis, Download a free copy of SIDE A below and Support Side B if ya feelin it. Years ago I put out a MIXTAPE with FatBeats around the time the Triple Threat Djs album was droppin on the FatBeats Label. It was a mix with a lot of the stuff I use to buy at the shop. High n Mighty, Blackstarr, Big L just to name a few. I was cleaning again the other day and found the actual MIXTAPE! I dont even have a tape deck anymore but luckily I also found them tape recorders we use to carry around so we could get drops from the folks for our mixtapes. Listening to this again reminded me of the good that FatBeats did for the hip hop community and got some great artists some shine.

Yeah, this is an older track but I did this remix a while back. Lupe Fiasco was a interesting breath of freshness to me when he first came out and I loved how kick push reminded me of hanging out in the Village in the blossoming turntablist/DJ scene. I don't know why but it just reminds me of that NYC subculture that was around at the time. So I had this upbeat track that I had put together and thought that it might fit well. It had this fun care free energy that I thought the lyrics would fit with. Cuz what is skating but freedom on wheels right? I found this great vocal sample from Erykah Badu's Bag Lady to back the hook up and I thought it completed the whole feel. enjoy and yes I can still Ollie.

on 420 i wanted to make something to pass out to the homies i might see at skratchpad. i felt an instrumental mix might be kinda fitting as a 420 soundtrack because if you were so inspired you could hop over to the tables and scratch a little while bumping this mix. plus, i haven't seen anyone do an instrumental mix in a while, so this felt like a nice little breather type mix.

Some of you who know me know I'm blessed enough to be guardian of the "boss of all bulldogs" the BOSS. Unfortunately Boss recently went to the Doctor and we discovered that he will need surgery for a torn ACL. His right rear leg "clicks" when he walks which is not good in the best of cases. As his guardian, I'm extremely concerned about his condition. Without his mobility I fear his quality of life will be diminished. But health care for dogs is just as problematic as it is for us bipedals. His surgey will cost about $4000! So I'm trying to figure out ways to raise the funds for him.

A while back I had put out a compilation called VIBE AID which is a CD full of some smooth joints to encourage personal recharging. I thought what better way is their to help Boss get back to good health then to help get y'all in a good place? So I'm re-releasing VIBE AID in support of BOSS AID. I'm also gonna be releasing a series of Mixes in the near future in hopes you will find it in you hearts to help the Boss, myself and my family. I raised him from when he was the size of a small water bottle. He's the closest thing I have to a kid.

the internet has swelled in the past few months around the idea of a tablet/slate device coming from apple. and now. finally it's here.

well not there.. but that artist rendering was pretty bang on.... but here:

im not gonna talk about what the ipad does. all the blog recounts of the presentation say that ipod/iphone users already know how to use the ipad. so if that implies the current ipad experience... we all already know.

but here is what i want the ipad to be able to do.

kaosIPAD. hook this up to your laptop and get an efx controller w/ x/y axis control.

tenorIPAD music creator/controller with this "app".

actually any sort of music creator/controller would be ill. people already have those drum/guitar/keyboard apps on their iphones. but this would allow for us to take advantage of the larger screen and space for more functions. i dont know how powerful this 1ghz a4 processor is... but someone put it to the test.

"Caliway" is Something I've had in my head a long time. I remember finding the sample some years ago and I knew I had a sample I probably would never have considered if I never had the opportunity to live in San Francisco. Ok, before anyone takes offense, and takes that the wrong way, let me explain... As some of you might know I'm not originally from the Bay but the East Coast. But when I moved to SF in the late 90's I was exposed to the heart and soul of the Bay Area and fell in luv with the sounds, people and life here.
Part of my training as a Dj came from the the World Class talent of DJ's I was lucky enough to be surrounded by in SF. I found it a blessing to have the experience of growing up a Dj exposed to New York's underground hip hop culture and in contrast the subtle differences I was now adding to my experience living out West. I remember being in the clubs almost every weekend, and one record that was a staple in almost every Dj's Crate in the Bay was RBL Posse's Bammer Weed. The infectious hook "Don't gimme know Bammer weed, we don't smoke that shit in the SFC!" made it an instant bay anthem that survives to this day. RBL sampled a classic cut from Marvin Gaye's I WANT YOU album "After the Dance". RBL in my opinion captured the energy of the Bay with that track. Fun and laid back but at the same time representing that "We dont give a f!@k attitude". And let's not forget the unwillingness to compromise when it comes to our "Greenery" around here. It's no wonder, it's a definitive track in the history of Bay Hip Hop. For myself its become a symbol of my induction into SF community and how I've embraced the way of life here.

So I was inspired to produce "Caliway". My very own interpretation of what the Bay sounds like to me. The Yay has been very good to me and I'm giving back the only way I can. I want to thank all the artists that were HUGELY instrumental in bringing this track to life. Anyone who knows me knows I am an avid NBA fanatic. I grew up in New York watching my favorite team the Knicks on MSG network and when lucky enough a couple of memorable moments at Madison Square Garden itself. From Kiki Vandeweghe, the X-man, Starks,Ewing to Oak:Basketball holds some of my fondest memories growing up.The Knicks also had a great role player by the name of Gerald Wilkins whose big brother needs no intro if you love Basketball. Dominique Wilkins was the Monster from the Atlanta Hawks and I always dreaded their visits to the Garden.But it was always fun to watch the brothers match up occasionally against each other since they both usually played the same position. Between Nique and Spud Webb, they were one of the most entertaining teams to watch. I always thought I could possibly dunk because I was taller than Webb. that didnt quite happen. I could tap glass though suckas!

Well recently I was asked to put a little promo mix together by Packer Shoes for Dominique aka "The Human Highlight Film" and the 20th Anniversary release of the Reebok Pump! Anyone growing up in the 80's had a pair or had a homie who made sure his shoes were pumped before he hit the Bball court after school! I use to swear my vertical went up by at least 2 inches wearing them joints! So I put this mix together to commemorate his career and put together some tracks that were out during his time. Kind of like a soundtrack to his life and times. Bet y'all didn't know Nique was not selected to the top 50 greatest playes of all time.WTF? Somebody go wake Commissioner Stern up. Now some of you may not know but I'm a sustainability freak and I do the best personally to Live Green. And that also extends into the Dj world for me. Over the years I've been through at the minimum a dozen headphones.I always invested in the mid level costing pair's thinking that I would always lose and damage them. And apparently that always happens to me. So the obvious solution would be to buy the most high end pair you can afford. Well, that's not always going to guarantee a indestructible pair. Usually the same parts brake on headphones: The joints above the ear cups. Rarely is there ever a problem with the sound of the headphones. So with a bit of black tape an old leather belt I found and some ingenuity,I gave these $150 pair of solid sounding Pioneer's a second life.I thought why not re-use what you can instead of adding more crap to the landfills? A bit of that vintage/used look no? Lets see how long these last..

Ahh Free shit! always a good thing. Vibe Aid was a compilation project I use to put out. Basically it was a bunch of stuff I loved listening to when I wasn't spinning in clubs. You know, music for when you washing dishes butt naked in an apron, or when you are vacuuming in you favorite cowboy boots and boxers..the usual. I also was super lazy to mix this so what I did was "fade in fade out". The whole project was about selection anyway and not my amazing mixing prowess(slamming records). Peep the goodies: anything from Barry White to the Skatalites..anything to aid your vibe...I thought it was clever no?..and sorry I can no longer find the artwork to this project so please accept this complimentary image of the Boss:head of Thinklab security and guest relations.

a few weeks back my homie p. picked me and cal up to roll around the 'town in his 87 grand nash(that thing is a beast). it was a pretty warm day and the ttops were off. the ride kinda made me want to make a summer bumps mix. random shit that had some knock to it. and as im going though songs, it kinda reminded me of back in the day when i used to make tapes. start stop style. just recording random shit...

for some reason, when i could afford em, i was always using these headphones:

but i always fell asleep with em on and they'd break. after rocking taped up headphones for a week, those little red and blue earbuds that came with your gameboy was the safe hold-me-down till i could save up another 20 bucks for new headphones. the broken joints i'd completely break up so the little speakers would lie under my pillow till they got totally broken. (broke kids are resourceful fuckers) this was like junior high till pretty much end of highschool. yeah, i had a portable cd player... but tapes were my first entry to bootlegging (riaa *wooooooooo). honestly, being into music is fucking expensive. back in the day just saying "expensive" was painful. in anycase, tapes allowed me to record shit from other people and the radio. yeah, i used to wait and try to catch songs off the radio... and then rewind/ffwd the fuck outta that one spot till the tape snapped. (hey you guys remember freezing batteries to make em last longer OR just ride them batteries till listening to tapes draggin hella slow just got unbearable? ((usually the kids at bart with sour ass lookin faces were pissed cause their batteries were draggin))) ... oh and tapes dont skip. i had digi shock on the cd player and it really couldn't
hang skipless when running to catch a bart train.

SIDETRACKED. sorry.

but the reason me and a bunch other cohorts rocked those headphones so hard, was because of the fact that they produced bass pretty well. so we could fuck off our eardrums in bassheavy bliss.

while recording mixes and shit from other people, i'd try to reserve certain tapes to make bass tapes. basically they were tapes with just bass heavy songs i'd have in rotation while i could afford those headphones.

so i decided to do what i hope will be a series of bass tapes. and to start off the series i decided to included a bunch of stuff that was on the tapes of my youth.
i put some stuff that is more recent, but i thought it went aight and kept it kinda movin.

so inspired by sun in the 'town, grand nationals, bay area adolescence and sony headphones... it's BTSA. if this were 93 it'd would stand for Bass Tape Side A. but this is 09 and everything is a frikin acronym. so yeah. its just btsa.

Summer is back folks and I hope you are having a great year so far. The vibe is definitely alive in SF with crazy street fairs and such such...oh, and don't forget to get your BBQ on! Speaking of BBQ's, Much respect to TRUE clothing and the homie DJ Ivan of the Pirate Djs for inviting me real quick to spin at the TRUE EAST BBQ last week. nothin like djing and turkey burgers with the folks on a sunny afternoon.
All this Summer talk reminded me of what I was blessed enough to do last summer which was a few spot dates with Zion I crew in Europe. I did some filming out there and decided to make a little docu-music-video since I was teaching myself some video editing at the time. I chose Zioni's "Birds eye view" joint to do the video cause I really like that tune and that was basically the view I had at the shows. Oh, and never mind about the intro speech with Zumbi cause we all know what happened... Hey, we got our wish!

If you havn't heard of Ms ShredOne, she is quickly becoming a fixture in the Bay Area nightlife circuit holding down solid residencies including Yoshi's SF. Shred held down the the Thinklab and flexed the selection skills like a veteran and definitely reminded me of what it means to call yourself a DJ.I'm not ashamed to say I was taking notes. kudos Ms. Shred..kudos.

went to the little dragon show at the independent on weds the 20th. despite only knowing like 3 of their songs, i was pretty suprised. not that i thought it would be a bad show... but it was kinda harder than i expected from this electronic-soul-rock band from sweden.

yukimi nagano (their lead singer) is mad cute. if you can, catch em live. you will agree that her lip curling and side of the mouth singing is strangely super attractive.

it's friday yall, and sorry but yer boy been busy lately... hence the lack of posts in a minute. but vinreezey has been holding you down for a minute so it's sall good.

d angelo... what can you say... dude is a freaking genius. but sometimes his real genius isn't too apparent. what i mean is, he spent much much time writing and arranging his music.. but the vocals hide that talent at times. i had the voodoo cd in hard ass rotation (pause is stupid) but it wasnt till i was able to track down the ep with the instrumental to Spanish Joint (my fave song on the album) that i got to really appreciate the genius of the instrumentation behind D's vocals.

i dont play a traditional instrument, but the fact that charlie hunter played the bass and guitar at the same time on an 8string guitar/bass combo is just really ill to me.

it's 3:15pm right now. it's friday and if you need something to move you through the finals hours of work... lemme help you out with that

So sometimes when I'm trying to make new stuff It's always a hit and miss process. Sometimes I feel like I got something going and other times I'm not going anywhere, and sometimes its something in the middle like this(hey, my opinion anyway).. I was messing with this Commodores record "Zoom". Its just a simple rearranged sample and looped up . At first I didn't like what I did with it but it grew on me.It felt good and It reminded me of a theme I've always tried to live my life by which is to do my best to live "Free", live "Fluid". when vinroc first mentioned he was going to shoot a video for LuvLuv, i mentioned that a peek into the making of the video might make for interesting blog content. so he invited me to tag along to observe and record some video of it's making.

we both kinda thought that shooting the video would consist of a few dudes + jenisis in a garage using vins video camera and maybe some flashlights for lighting... well maybe not that "homegrown"... but we didn't really expect the super legit studio,equipment, and minds the universe saw fit to bless the project with.

i think my favorite aspect of observing the making of the video was watching it grow. from the studio, to the other people who are in the video, and all the ideas as to how to make a quality video just kinda snowballed into a great project. it's an awesome example of creative people working together for the sake of art. shout out to hayves who helped take the video in that direction.

so a homey on facebook hit me up asking about how to get booked. and my reply ended up looking like a cool blog post. his question was about trying to get booked. and so here is what i said. disclaimer: i am not booked as much as i would like. so i hope im not comin preachy or sideways. this is just what i think i have learned thus far and if it helps people out... werdemup. if someone got more input or a different way that gets them booked globally... HOOK ME UP DUNNY

ah the dj game. it's a difficult one. but not impossible! as with a lot of things, part of it is who you know. sounds kinda wack... but in all things, people book who they know. the good thing is that most people who book are really cool. some people think that this might imply ass kissing or other forms of wack politiking... but its not like that. if i had to structure a method for getting it booked, it might look like this:

a) find out what events are events you would like to play for. get to know people. talk to promoters. try working with the ones you get along with. give out mix cds. (demos should always be live and editing to a minimum. separating tracks is a must.

b) be honest, and figure out if you think you would be right for this type of party. sounds weird, but i see djs have hard times getting booked because they arent rocking the crowd. it's kinda a case of the wrong dj for the wrong crowd.

c) be patient. in the time that you arent getting booked, maybe start a website/blog. get people knowing your name. i put up free mixes on my blog: djbrigidope.blogspot.com
it kinda helps people booking if they hear of you in other ways than at the club. drinking + loud music = lousy memory.

if you start a blog, dont just talk about gigs. infact, try to talk about normal people stuff or stuff thats interesting to you.. rare records, favortie producers, what you cooked for dinner. people on the internet who seem like they are always selling something get annoying. giving people information and making yourself valuable to people means people are paying attention.

d) network with djs you know that you like spinning with/get along with and try getting on places. dont be pushy... this is where a demo mix works... because you can pick up some last min gigs and/or if a dj you know is booking for something, it helps them know that you are a dj they feel confident in to book.

when all else fails...

book yourself.

im serious. find a spot that will let you play. being the bay area you cant swing a freaking pair of headphones around without hitting another dj. but if you come across a place that fits your vibe... do it. vinroc always says "if you build it they will come" yeah he took that from a movie... but its kinda true. throwing parties are a whole nother beast. but feel free to holler if you got questions about that.

damn this is a pretty long message. heh. i think ill use it as a blog post. but yeah man, holler if you got more questions. i dont mind answering them if i know the answer.

We were lucky enough to get access to a video studio through my peoples Herm who does video work as well as some audio engineering. He has already done a few songs for me on the upcoming "Revealing Album". He introduced me to the main man Hayves who has done videos for keek da sneek and Mobb Deep. Queens Represent Son!...Well I partly grew up in Elmhurst Queens so I get a pass. One of the Dj's who I have much respect for and also I'm privileged to know personally is my "Pare", the west coast homeboy, Dj Rhettmatic. Rhett forwarded me this dope ass live session with his world famous crew the Beat Junkies. I'll let him get thorough on y'all about the details...

Happy New Years! I thought I share some old live recordings of the Beat Junkies to start off the new year.....

This particular recording was a recorded live in Japan in the August of 2002. We were celebrating our 10 Year Anniversary of the Beat Junkies throughout the whole year.....the crew was founded in 1992 and we are probably the last of the remaining 3 major Turntabist crews that came out in the early 90's during the Turntablists/Battle Djs Golden Era. The Invisibl Skratch Piklz broke up and the X-Ecutioners no longer have the original member line up and went thru a couple of line up changes before they took a break (the X-Ecutioners later came back together with original members Rob Swift, Roc Raida, Total Eclipse with new members Precision & Boogie Blind....Mr. Sinister left the group after their 2nd album dropped).

Also during that time, alot of stuff was going on with the crew. We officially started our label, Beat Junkie Sound, as well as making that transition into a small business corporation. We dropped a few vinyl singles as well as releasing the 1st Turntable Instrumental album by our fellow Beat Junkie, D-Styles. The breakthrough album was called "Phantsmagoria". J.Rocc, Melo-D, & myself were special guests on Dilated Peoples' "Expansion Team" album, recording a song with Babu called "Dilated Junkies". We were doing productions, dropping mixtapes left and right, & doing scratches for Hip Hop records. We dropped our 1st ever DVD called "Private Stash" and half of the crew (Babu, J.Rocc, Melo-D, Mr. Choc, Icy Ice, Curse, & myself) were on the airwaves, both on 2 major Radio stations in LA: Power 106 & 92.3 The Beat. We were still doing our monthly event, "Nightlife", at the Knitting Factory in Hollywood (we started NIGHTLIFE around 2001). Babu was pretty much involved with Dilated and myself with the Visionaries.....and for the most part, this was time when all four of us (Babu, Melo-D, J.Rocc, & myself or sometimes the combo would interchange with either Shortkut and/or D-Styles in the line-up as well) would still tour & perform heavily as a group.

So fast forward to August 2002, Dilated Peoples & the Beat Junkies were asked to perform at the Technics' 30 Yr Anniversary to commemorate the 30 years that the Technics 1200 Turntable has been around in the business. Dilated & ourselves were the headliners, but we were also sharing the stage with Japan's very own Heavyweights: Dj Muro, Dj Krush, & Mighty Crown (Japan's top Reggae Soundsystem & the 1st Japanese crew to win the Reggae World Soundclash). We were able to extend our trip to throw a "NIGHTLIFE" event in Japan and to celebrate the Junkies' 10 Yr. Anniversary. My main man Koreishi (he used to work for a import company called "Metrolounge") helped to coordinate our 10 Yr Anniversary.......At the our Anniversary show, we had Dj Tashi (92 DMC Japan Champ) do an opening party rocking set and of course we had Rakaa Iriscience handling the mic duties. This was a 2 Hour performance/party rocking set; 5 turntables, 4 mixers, 2 Pioneer EFX500 boxes, & the real kicker.....RECORDS! Yes people, this was waay before the Serato explosion. Anyways, the first 5 minutes is basically us rocking a Turntable band set (basically all of us on one turntable each: Babu = Lead Vocals, Melo-D = Lead Guitars, J-Rocc = Percussion & Rhythm Section, & me = The Drummer). The rest of the mix is pretty much our individual party rocking sets gettin down, "Beat Junkie Style". Evidence (Dilated Peoples), Dj Muro, GM Yoshi, & Key-Kool (Visionaries) were in the crowd.

So yeah, a little blast from the past for all you turntable junkies/dj afficinados...giving you a taste what we were doing in 2002. Another Remix I did a while back that was sitting on the Hard drive.If any of you have listened to the BeatFreaks project yet you will recognize the track as "the Druid". But before it was the druid it was "lift me" from the fam Zioni and the City of Dope album that came out a while back. I actually made the track as a remix for lift me. It's a sample from a 60's rock band that probably did a lot of illicit drugs, but they sure made some great sounds while they were on "their journey"...

Ordinary Mash Up? or Remix?

When I made this I wasn't thinking mash up.I was like this is a cool remix. But what is the difference between a mash up and a remix? In today's world of music I am at a loss as to how to exactly describe it. The first time Mash ups became popular, a Dj standing next to me at an event whispered to me, "Thats that shit we use to do when we were clowning around in the basement! and people love it?!". I think what he was trying to say was the selection and blending of records that were not even close in terms of genre and making them work was like a game and demonstration of skill rather than an actual remix. So then what is a remix? For myself the definition of a remix is a total new sound for a track. So in my book if you have an acapella to a song, you must have all new musical elements that harmonize with the vocal. But that could also be defined as a mash up right? True, but I think the difference would be that the music would have to stay within the same "sphere" or genre that the music came from. So urban with urban or R&B etc...So back to this John Legend "ordinary people" track. What is it? If it was up to me I would call it a "re-edit". Its not exactly a mash up or remix in my opinion, it's an edit of the original track to make it more club friendly. I used the popular bangara riddim to back up the existing track with some acapella editing. I will leave it up to you folks to decide. Now as for myself I was happy that the mash up became popular because it really helped brake down musical and cultural barriers and in turn popular music has blurred its lines in terms of what good music can be. Kid rock is perfect example of the kind of artists that mash ups can reflect. A kid who grew up with hip hop sensibilities who is now a blues and rock singer.Is it my thing personally? No, but that's the beauty and diversity of music and the people who make it and that's a wonderful thing.

Roy Ayers "Searching" Remix!

Roy Ayers has got to be in the top 10 sampled artists list of all time and for good reason. In my book his music is legendary and I think his music will be loved for many generations. Classics like "Everybody loves the sunshine" and the boogie-esque "Running away" are records that are always filed in the record collection under "never ever will you sell these" shelf. I remember before the Serato Scratch days, I was so excited when I got doubles of "Running away" just so I can loop the break. (Yes, I have a sampler, but there's a satisfaction of doing it manually.. it's a dj thing). Running away always fit well in a House set but I wanted to include more Roy Ayers tracks in my Dj sets. I found a few Masters at Work remixes(Kenny Dope I know you'll neva read this but you the man! Tri-State represent!) but there was one particular classic ayers track I liked so much that I couldn't find a remix of. "Searching" is a classic in my book and I always felt the Horn section had something going on so I had to flip it. I remixed it with some other elements from a few other records,some live instrumentation and click clack-SLAP! enjoy aficionados....

I picked this record up shopping with my peoples dj rhettmatic last time I was in Long Beach. I was diggin the .99 cent bin and found this jem. Quartette tres bien is that classic rythmic jazz you always imagine hearing when your watchin a classic movie and Rita Hayworth just stepped into the scene. I call it "Boss music". It has a commanding and sexual quality. Peep "Lover come back to me" and tell me if that's not perfect for cooking up a mean chicken parmesan from martha stewarts cookbook...or doing business with your luvluv. Take your pick. Beatsmiths feel me at :53 & 1:11. Call up Common for a quick 16 bars and its a wrap! The energetic title track " Boss tres bien" is also on my jeepney mix. Good music y'all.
